06 October 2011 - "Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple has passed away. Steve was a great man with unsurpassable achievements and incredible brilliance. His work has forever changed the way we use and see technology. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. I will miss all his keynote speeches and he will continue to inspire my work to try and do the best and make the most of everything today" - Angelo Millena

Android-based tablets to arrive next month, with a Windows release later in the year.
Lenovo has finally entered the tablet market by unveiling a pair of devices running Android 3.1, with a Windows tablet to follow.
Lenovo unveiled tablets at CES in Las Vegas at the beginning of the year - and released the LePad in China - but the ThinkPad and IdeaPad are the first to be given release dates in Australia.
First up is the ThinkPad Tablet, a business-focused device running Android, which is generally regarded as a consumer OS. The tablet will be released in September along with a carry case featuring a built-in keyboard and integrated optical trackpoint. It will also come with an optional, pressure-sensitive capacitive pen to make note-taking easier, Lenovo said.
The 10.1in ThinkPad Tablet runs a 1GHz, dual-core Nvidia Tegra, and features a 1,280 x 800 IPS display made of Gorilla Glass for extra durability. It's 13.3mm thick and weighs 750g, with Lenovo promising an eight-hour battery life.
The ThinkPad comes preloaded with software including security tools for encryption, VPN, and remote device wiping, as well as popular games such as Angry Birds. It features wi-fi and Bluetooth, and supports a SIM card for 3G, as well as USB, micro-USB and Mini HDMI ports.

--- Global Switch data centre suffers power outage ---
A power issue on level two of Global Switch’s Sydney data centre sent some customers offline for approximately half an hour this morning.
One of facility's two power distribution feeds ceased working for a "limited number of clients" at about 10.20am. Sources identified this as Phase 'B'.
Equipment that used two sources of power continued to function throughout the outage; however, smaller servers and network equipment that accessed a single power feed went offline.
PacNet, HarbourMSP, Exigent, and Servers Australia were among those affected.
Servers Australia's managing director Jared Hirst said his customers were affected for only “three to four minutes” before staff re-routed traffic to back-up equipment at Equinix.
A PacNet customer service representative said the call centre was “being bombarded with calls” due to a “network issue” that lasted about one hour, until noon.
Global Switch Commercial Manager Damon Reid told iTnews it was “working through an incident” that was attributed to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit.
“At the moment, our focus is to speak to clients and rectify the issue,” he said.

Xen Server 6.0 beta released!
The newly released beta of Citrix XenServer 6.0 features cross-platform management tools compatible with VMware vSphere and Microsoft System Center, as well as the integration of the Open vSwitch, first introduced with XenServer 5.6, as the default network stack for the product.
Based on the Xen 4.1 hypervisor, XenServer 6.0 includes a new Self Service Manager virtual appliance which can be used to create virtual machine (VM) service catalogs based on both XenServer and vSphere. XenCenter 6.0 allows for the creation of multi-VM virtual appliances, or vApps, which can be imported/exported using the Open Virtualization Format standard. VMware Virtual Machine Disk Format and Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk virtual disks can also be imported. Starting with this release, users can use Microsoft’s forthcoming System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2012 to manage and monitor XenServer hosts and VMs.
Open vSwitch is now the basis for distributed virtual networking within XenServer, as well as network interface card-bonding support and jumbo frames support. XenServer 6.0 also now brings previously separate StorageLink and Site Recovery features into the fold. With the integration of StorageLink, some array support is retired, according to a post on the Citrix website: “Focus for StorageLink support is being placed on arrays with standards-based SMI-S interfaces (e.g. EMC Clariion) and those which are widely used with XenServer (NetApp and Dell EqualLogic).”
Citrix also recently retired its Essentials line -- which included StorageLink -- for Hyper-V, citing overlap with SCVMM 2012.
